چکیده

novel data, which together served to define and explicate an understanding of the alcoholic Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS) from the clinical and basic science perspectives. The symposium's five presentations covered neuropathology, epidemiology, neural and genetic mechanisms, neuropsychological and neuroradiological signs of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) and Korsakoff's syndrome (KS), and therapeutic approaches to reduce or reverse the potentially devastating and life threatening condition of WKS. The essence of each of the five talks is presented here, and each contributor provided references from the literature to direct scientists and clinicians interested in WKS to primary research sources.

Benefits of Thiamin (Vitamin B1) Administration in Neurodegenerative Diseases May Be Due to Both the Coenzyme and Non-coenzyme Roles of Thiamin

Although no systematic studies on therapeutic value of thiamin administration in neurodegenerative diseases are available to draw statistically significant conclusion, beneficial effects of thiamin in the diseases have been observed in independent case reports. The data are usually interpreted as improvement of central metabolism due to the coenzyme role of thiamin diphosphate (ThDP) in the tra...

Unraveling the pathophysiology of alcohol-induced thiamin deficiency.

IT TOOK OVER 4,500 YEARS FROM the first written description of beriberi in the Chinese medical book Neiching in 2687 B.C. until the first description of the causative “vitamine” deficiency by Polish scientist Casimir Funk in 1911 (1), and the biochemical description of thiamin pyrophosphate structure and its synthesis by Robert Williams in 1936 (11). Humans cannot synthesize thiamin, and it mus...

Effects of early thiamin deficiency and subsequent rehabilitation on the cholinergic system in developing rat brain.

The effects of thiamin deficiency during pregnancy and/or lactation on brain cholinergic system in rat pups were studied. Dietary rehabilitation for a period of 5 weeks from the 28th day was instituted to study possible 'catch-up' in the brain acetylcholine levels. Brain acetylcholine level was found to be significantly decreased on the 21st and 28th days in pups of the dams fed thiamin deficie...

Effect of chronic alcohol feeding on physiological and molecular parameters of renal thiamin transport.

The renal thiamin reabsorption process plays an important role in regulating thiamin body homeostasis and involves both thiamin transporters-1 and -2 (THTR1 and THTR2). Chronic alcohol use is associated with thiamin deficiency. Although a variety of factors contribute to the development of this deficiency, effects of chronic alcohol use on renal thiamin transport have not been thoroughly examin...

Thiamin deficiency and brain disorders.

Thiamin plays a key role in the maintenance of brain function. Thiamin diphosphate is cofactor for several enzymes involved in glucose metabolism whereas thiamin triphosphate has distinct properties at the neuronal membrane. Thiamin metabolism in the brain is compartmented between neurons and neighbouring glial cells. Thiamin deficiency is commonly encountered in severe malnutrition associated ...
